“The Number 1” by Roland Weber
The power of one begins with selection.
By isolating a single subject, the photographer can decide what is important and eliminate any distractions.
Composition, staging, lighting and timing then determine how much presence the subject can command within the frame.
Without other subjects competing for attention, even the smallest detail can become significant.
A gesture, an expression, or the direction of the light can hold our attention and tell the story.

A solitary subject does not necessarily have to fill the entire photograph. Sometimes its power comes from the space around it. A distant figure, a small animal, a single building or boat can hold our attention precisely because there is nothing else competing for it. The empty space becomes part of the photograph, giving the subject room to breathe and often making it seem more significant. Our eyes are drawn to it and, once found, keep returning to it.

The most memorable photographs often depend on something less controllable: the instant when gesture, expression, light and circumstance converge. While the photographer can prepare the frame, recognising that fraction of a second is what transforms a single subject into a story.

This series was designed to inspire current members, but it has also provided an opportunity to revisit the archives and rediscover some of the outstanding work that has been submitted over the past 19 years.
Many of these photographs deserve to be seen again, and I hope that revisiting them will inspire new work for years to come.
